There were three glaring weaknesses this season:

- Could not keep a clean sheet. Especially at set plays
- Seriously lacked width

- Real problem in scoring from open play. Especially
after Henry and Van- Persie got injured.

Arsenal Analysis resident season ticket holder at the Emirates, South Stand: Row 5 using his “hands on experience” discusses the team’s weaknesses and comes up with the names to fill in the vacancies at Arsenal Football Club.

Could not keep a clean sheet. Especially at set plays

I watched every single home game this season live at the Emirates – except Bolton and CSKA - and a few of the away ones (It’s always fun going to the Lane!) and my mind is clear as to what the problem with the defence was (is).

Neither Kolo Toure nor Gallas are comfortable in attacking the ball at set plays or from long throws. For this reason Gilberto was usually recruited. But in doing this he was getting dragged out of position – remember he is not a centre back – and if the ball was not cleared effectively there was no player on the edges of the box to stop the opposition from resuming their attack.

Both Gallas and Toure are exceptional defenders, but they are too similar. They both like using their speed as their main asset. However their pace comes in handful as the fullbacks are hardly ever in position to defend and the central defenders are usually there to cover.

Seriously lacked width

We have missed Reyes and Pires a lot this year. They are the two players that made it viable for us to play a 4 5 1 formation, especially in Europe. Reyes provided natural width and in the process helped create space for Fabregas to dominate the midfield, and I always thought Pires would find a way to score. His link up play and his understanding with Henry created so many goals.

Without the natural width we have struggled this year. Rosicky and Hleb tended to drift towards the middle making it an even more congested midfield and very complicated to get the ball to the strikers.

They are not really wide players are they? They are more your roaming attack minded midfielders. More like a traditional number 10 and this is why they probably drift infield rather than stretch the right or left backs on the line. Not, as Henry has suggested, because of the wide spaces of the new stadium! Everything is being blamed on the new stadium! We don't buy that! Wenger is in denial… again

Real problem in scoring from open play. Especially after Henry and Van-Persie got injured

We have missed way too many easy chances this year. If we had converted only a third of them we would have been at least second in the league, gone to Anfield for a Champions League quarterfinal and played an FA cup semi final! At least.

Think about it.

Aston Villa, Boro, Chelsea, Everton, Newcastle and West Ham were points thrown away at home. Man City and West ham were games we should have won away.

The crucial question about the attack for next season is whether AW believes that Henry is going to be fit and back to his best. Because without Henry we need to invest very heavily on a forward. Even with a fit Henry we still need to get another quality striker so as to widen the options and create cover. Adebayor and Van Persie can not in my opinion get enough goals between them to make us serious contenders next season.

The jury is still out on Bendtner. Who knows he might even end up a better player than Henry. But surely he will need next season to be blooded into the squad and accustom himself to the demands of the Premier League.

Copa America and the Africa Cup of Nations

On top of all the above there are two more things to consider when planning for next season: the Copa America and the Africa Cup of nations.

This means that we will be without Gilberto until late September and we will lose Ade, Eboue and Kolo in the middle of the season for around six weeks.

Diaby will probably get a chance in the middle first up, and maybe Song will be used as back up so I think that area will not be strengthened. I am still a bit surprised however that Wenger decided to sell Muamba especially as Flamini is on his way out as well.

Wenger seems to have lost faith in Senderos in the second part of the year, but we have Djourou and Gilberto that can play there as cover.

Up front Bendtner will probably get his chance in the period after xmas. And Hoyte will cover for Eboue’s absence.

We need a winger

I wish Reyes came back as he is the only decent winger with premiership experience and he can provide cover as a striker when required and not use any of our transfer budget! Failing that Ribery, Malouda and Quaresma would be excellent additions. Walcott will learn a lot from any of them.

But another option is to go for Micah Richards! Yes at right back and later as a central defender when he matures. As a result promote Eboue into a wide right midfielder!

We need a striker

Best possible buy would be Eto’o but due to his price that is probably never going to happen especially if they want Henry as part of the deal. Why not go for someone who is already playing in the Premiership. Arsenal Analysis has advocated Anelka (Anelka for Arsenal), but there are others who would score goals for fun; especially with the number of chances that this team creates! Such as Tevez, D. Bent, Martins,Nugent. They are all decent goalscorers. Or if from abroad Kone of PSV and the Brazilian Wagner Love. They will require a settling in period which could be from six months to a year though.

My personal choice however would be Kanoute – now playing exceptionally well for Sevilla and is a former Premiership player, albeit with Spurs. He is very quick, a good finisher and decent in the air.

We need left back cover

I know that Gallas can play there but that would disrupt his partnership with Toure and would leave us exposed during the Africa Cup of Nations. Traore is good but too young. Go for Abidal, Gareth Bale, Leighton Baines (not all, one of them).

I wander what list Wenger has drawn up.

I hope he has one!

QUS: I wander what list Wenger has drawn up?
ANS: probably nothing close to ur suggestion (which is not but bad) but are there such funds to fulfill his dreams?
True the likes of Thomas and Helb drift in easily but i've heard no one querry if that was the instuctions of the boss, and if they weren't how come it was never rectified during the season.
we compare this 2 players to reyes and Pires, have we checked their stats and goals scoring ratios in their previous teams or career so far b4 we shoot them down? Have we questioned the fact that the boss might be aware of their goals return b4 he bought them? Helb especailly.
i agree with you that the season has be below standard but i dont think its down to just a few players. i personally put it down to a complete overhaul or can i say change of guard.

Much of what you say, I agree with but I am sure that Wenger is also aware of where the faults are. The difficulty for him is that he has to operate in the real world, unlike the fanatsy world of the internet football manager.

If Vela comes back, I cannot see Wenger buying another striker but I agree with the need for a wide player - and that is Ryan Babel, not Frank Ribery.

I completely lost you on the left-back argument. Abidal must have won the award for the worst player at the World Cup last year. I truly found it hard to believe that any player could be so bad - even Baptista! Bale is no older than Traore and it looks like he is going to wreck his career in N17. Leighton Baines? As understudy to Clichy? I just don't really see it.

i'd go for babel on the left wing, micah richards to play on the right (back/mid) or cover centre of defence, and.... defoe up front - he knows how to score from inside/outside the box - what more do we want? what joo reckon?

DEAR COMRADES, I SALUTE YOU IN THE NAME OF ARSENAL MY MIGHTY TEAM.AM STILL INCLINE TO THE IDEA OF WENGER BUYING SWIFT AND ACCURATE FINISHERS. BECAUSE THAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST GAP WE HAD THIS SEASON. NAMES DOESNT BOTHER ME, BUT STRIKER THAT CAN MEET THE ABOVE WILL ALWYAS BE MY FAVOURITE AND HE SHOULD BE ABOVE 22 YEARS OLD

Why are Arsenal fans so impatient? (have we spoilt by achieving so much in a short period of time?)

I know this season has been frustrating for arseanl fans, as we have shown glimpses of brilliance against top teams, whilst also creating so many chances & not finishing inferior teams.

However the fans who are obsessed with wanting to sign this player or that player 'thinking' its going to guarentee success are crazy!

Unfortunately Arsenal can't compete with the likes of Che$ki, Man ure, etc in the transfer market. Arsene has done an amazing job finding & developing youth talent from around the world. We should be glad that we have a manager with vision & who has a long term plan for the club, to compete not just in the field but be financially healthy & viable long term! We need to be patient in the mean time, theres no quick success solutions.

Don't expect arsene to go on a spending spree, we have a squad that has been unlucky this season with a slow start due to injuries, inexperience, new stadium etc. Even if we don't sign anybody we will still have an excellent squad needed to compete. RvP, Henry, Ade, Bendtner, Wallcott. If we can keep this group of players, with maybe a new quality winger (Babel, Ribery) we will be dominating for seasons to come.

1. Striker:
We need one proven goal scorer. I see Ajax main striker, Huntelaar who, I think is all around striker with fantastic heading ability. He will cost (~12-15m). I doubt we will get Eto'o without losing Henry. Tevez as is expensive as Eto'o. Kone is probably a decent Premiership player, but he is not a natural striker. He is just as good as Adebayor.
D.Bent or Anelka won't be a bad business if any of them comes cheap.

2. About winger.
If Reyes doesn't come back, may be Ryan Babel could be acquired to play as a winger and support striker. But I personally believe in Hleb and Rosicky all around play that compensate all that. All our problems this season have been a lack of making any opportunity count (no real striker).

3. About another defender.
I think Gallas and Toure are as individual fantastic defenders. But I don't think their current partnership will make the current squad a winner, unless AW improve them. Djourou and Senderos are still top draw for me; But getting a young English Richard Mica to raise the fighting spirit of the squad won't be a bad thing to do.

'another internet manager' we are all internet managers. its fun. its what fans do. ffs if you dont want to discuss the future of Arsenal dont even bother coming to an Arsenal blog you miserable fucker.
copa america til september could leave us short. would both denilson and Gilberto be gone? Song will go to the ANC as well, thank fuck!
given these two competitions it might seem the squad cannot cope with any injuries during that period. we need walcott and bendtner to step up for sure, but its very clear we do need to buy at least one top quality scoring winger with a bit of experience.

Wingers, wingers, wingers is all we need! Micar Richards and push Eboue up as a wing attack would be a tryable solution and RYAN BABEL on the other wing as he can be one utility player during Afcon n Coper Amerigo. Queresma could add a little of the charisma we need at ther Emerates to scare opponents shitless when we on fire...... Senderos should definatly go... we all know.

I think this team is nearly there to be honest, wingers in the shape of Quaresma and Babel would go down a treat. Richards has revealed his desire to play for us and i think someone of his size would be a great addition!

To be honest i have been to many games since at the emirates and i see RVP as being a brilliant attacking mind witht he ability to score goals from nothing. so on that account i disagree.

Another point would be that rosiscky is needed as that attacking force from outside the box i believe he is a better asset than a winger.

Finally i see the best striking buy for us being another midfielder, huntelaar to be exact, as he can connect with RVP and everybody knows that netherlands players are the most technical and we need somer more of that.

I think L'Arse should sign Ribery (oh sorry gone to Bayern) and Bale (oh sorry signed for the only true North London Club) Looks like another season of decay and decline then. I suppose it with be a fight with Portsmouth and West Ham for a EUFA cup spot.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar for Striker and Frank Ribery for a right winger. The right wing is where we lacked penetration into the oppositions box for sometime even when Pires and Lunjgberg were available as well. Huntelaar can provide us the goals and Ribery the strength and width on the right wing. We really miss Bergkamp!!

What we miss...

After spending a second consecutive season finishing 4th with 20pts+ from the eventual winner, I decided to compare the top three sides key players and how we compare against them. Hopefully this will highlight our needs, so starting from the back:

Man$$$ Chelski Liver$$$
GK - van der Saar Cech Reina
RB - Neville Ferreira Finnan
CD - Ferdinand Terry Agger
CD - Vidic Carvalho Carraghe
LB - Heinze A. Cole Riise
RM - Ronaldo J. Cole Pennant
DM - / Makalele Mascherano
CM - Carrick Essien Alonso
AM - Scholes Lampard Gerrard
LM - Giggs Robben Kewell
A - Rooney Kalou Kuyt
S - Saha Drogba Crouch

The reason why there are 12 players up above is to accommodate a change in tactics between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. The right mixture is the key because it brings about that crucial balance to the side. Man$$$ will add (two) players, the Milan game showed they have a DM gap and out of favour Saha, that is why they got Hargreaves and were sniffing around Adebayor and Berbatov. But Huntelaar or Owen are more probable targets, spending ~40m. While Chelski will get (four) to account for the ANC and their RB weakness by possibly recalling Crespo, Johnson & Alex to add to our reject Sidwell, this means they would spend nothing which is possible but they could just as easily spend 50m+ if they wished as we already saw with their bid for Chimbonda. While Liverpool will go on their annual scattergun signing campaign by replacing at least up to six players and replacing them with these (six), Milito, Alves and Villa/Bent plus finalising the purchases of Mascherano and Voronin and Leiva, which could set them back a massive ~60m. This will leave all three even stronger next year. But enough about our competitors, let's look at our key 25 man squad. We assume that Baptista and Poom have been accompanied on their merry way by Aliadiere and Flamini. Making way for Bendtner, Traore and Fabianski, leaving us with:

1st 2nd
GK - Lehmann Almunia/Fabian
RB - Eboue Hoyte
CD - Toure (Senderos)
CD - Gallas Djourou
LB - Clichy Traore
RM - Hleb (Ljung)/Walcott
DM - Gilberto Song
CM - Diaby Denilson
AM - Fabregas /
LM - Roszicky ???
A - Henry van Persie
S - Adebayor Bendtner

As you can see above we have a single gap in our squad and it is at (LM). I will not speculate at this point as to which player should come in, as long as he has pace & goals in his locker. Now that we filled the gap, we have to determine where our competitors hold that crucial competitive advantage. First up is our CD partnership, they are brilliant individually but are too similar. The best combination is speed-agility / height-strength. Since Sol 188cm left we are clearly too weighted towards the first two. We do have Senderos in reserve, who should have offered that alternative, for tough aerial opposition like Chelski/Bolton/Liverpool, but he's looked increasingly like Cygan! Our competitors don't have that problem as they have players that combine both sets of requirements: Ferdinand 189cm / Vidic 189cm who formed the best partnership this season and Terry 186cm / Carvalho 183cm best last year. Liverpool have Agger 189cm / Carragher 186cm. While we have Toure 183cm / Gallas 181cm, see the problem. Senderos's contract runs out next summer and the fact he still didn't sign an extension is indicative of his imminent departure, possibly to Newcastle. The only problem is that he caries one of seven crucial required UEFA qualifying spots in our squad. So unless Le Boss is going to promote a teenager we will have to buy English. Hleb has been good and does deserve to inherit the starting berth on the right, but Ljungberg has become an expensive liability. His injuries have resulted in him starting just 16 Prem games this season and scored two goals and for somebody that is on 70k per week is simply not good enough, plus we didn't hear Le Boss slam the recent rumours like he did with Fabregas & Henry, Portsmouth beckons for him. That leaves Walcott as an understudy on the right wing, hopefully giving us pace. It is imperative that you have two quick skillful wingers with an end product. Man$$$ have Ronaldo/Park, Chelski have Robben/Cole while Liverpool still need to find their balance. Walcott's involvement on the wing frees up a squad place up front (A). Le Boss's recent comments and Home Office developments certainly indicate that Vela will be recalled from his loan spell. But most probably will be re-loaned to a London Championslip club in order to get him aclimatised. This could be done on a month to month basis just in case we need him. First replacement will have to provide height at the back and allow us to play Gallas/???/Toure/Hoyte for tougher away days. While the last left midfield player must accommodate a fast counter attack and perhaps a possibility of playing a true 4-3-3 formation of ???/Henry/van Persie. Most importantly, these two players have to stop the "Predictable Arsenal" tag we have recently earned:

1st 2nd
GK - Lehmann Almunia/Fabian
RB - Eboue Hoyte
CD - Toure ???
CD - Gallas Djourou
LB - Clichy Traore
RM - Hleb Walcott
DM - Gilberto Song
CM - Diaby Denilson
AM - Fabregas (Vela)
LM - Roszicky ???
A - Henry van Persie
S - Adebayor Bendtner

For the end, I just couldn't help but finish with my wish list: Babel (new Henry) and Davies (new Ferdinand). We can offer both a guaranteed squad place on a week to week basis, all they would cost us under 15m, BARGAIN!!!
