SearchArsenal: Is It Now All About The Future ?David 02nd March 2006 In the Summer of 2005, I was back in England for 2 months. Reading the sports page of The Daily Mail one morning in a coffee shop I noticed an article suggesting that Juventus were making a bid for Patrick Vieira. Here we go again thinks I, nothing to write so it’s time for the 'Vieira is leaving' story. I say to myself, 'Well. of course this time they can’t say its Real Madrid because that was put to bed last year, so lets say its Juve'. I really didn't think anything would come of it.

So we've made a decision that we can't compete and won't buy as a result. Where does that leave our financial obligation for Ashburton Grove? How long will the Club Level put up with no Champions League football? Because, based on your scenario, if we don't get Champions League this year there's not much chance for another three years. We've bought promising kids where our form for the first half of the season screamed out for experience. As far as Arsenal Football Club is concerned Chelsea isn't a problem, nor is Man Utd our problem is putting bums on seats at The Grove.
If that is full every week, everything else takes care of itself. But the worrying thing is we're on a slide. We needed experienced players (Wenger himself admitted that at the AGM) and we've put even more kids in the mix. If you think we can wait three years have a look at our last 15 games in the Premiership. We've got just 14 points. That's relegation form. Wake up and smell the coffee. We can't wait for the kids to mature.

Eddiethered, thats probably why arsenal sold the club level seats on long contracts some of which were for four years. That way they get the cash upfront & by the time the contract ends arsenal should have the players to be back at the top. Its a cunning plan if thats why they done it

i think a lot fo people totally underest the loss of our full backs this season. the left side of our game was key to setting up goals, striking opptys and the flow of attacking football weve all been used to. the understadning between bobby+ash + th and on the other wing freddie+ralph gave us effectively a fluid 6 man attacking midfield which tore opponents apart. watch the games..the times weve passed along the penalty box waiting for the outside overlap never to occur..when was the last time we saw any of our full backs appear anywhere near opposition 18yd box let alone attacking the bi-line?
its crucially integral to our game. makes everyhting and everyone tick. in such a system gilberto becomes the holding midfield player and breaks up opposition counters...hes excellent at doing this. gives time for the full backs to recover. this season, we have effectively just a 4 man midfield and it means gilberto has to become an attacking/creative sort. this isnt his strong point obvly. it means also opposition can conc and bully cesc knowing gilberto wont hurt them. even without ash or clichy we havent had anyone to build a solid style on the other wing. ralph has had constant changes to deal with and had his mind on shoring an experinced back line. it hasnt been easy. the only time ash came back for us we scored 7 goals. he may not have overlapped and ran the touchline, but he gave us confidence and security to play our natural game. our problems havent been the midfield, they havent been the forward line...its the loss of our overlapping full backs which has compromised our style of play.

Eddythered.. I am not saying we can't compete on anything for 3 years, I am saying we can't compete for the Premiership for 3 years, this year is 1 !. I would expect we would still looking to finish on the Champions League places next season I think we have experianced players, sadly its those players who have let us down this season, not the youngsters.
Maz , very good point. Paul Darcy, Thankyou !

Interesting article from Dave the Gooner, most of which I agree with.
I think the point needs to be made that in football, like life itself, very few things are guaranteed. I make this point in reference to Henry possibly moving to another club with a view to winning more silverware/the European Cup in particular. Yes, Henry is approaching the peak years of his game and quite rightly wants to be competing for and hopefully winning the major prizes in the game. But if he were to move to another club, i.e. Barcelona, there is simply no guarantee either that he would win the major prizes, in particular the European Cup, nor that he would enjoy the same degree of success generally as he has at Arsenal. In short, he could move to Barcelona, & not win anything at all. He could play okay for them, but without winning the hearts & minds of the club & fans in the way that he has done at Arsenal. We know from the history of the game we love that it simply doesn't work in the ways that several pundits & commentators have painted: Henry + Barcelona = guaranteed winning formula for the major prizes. As they say in Star Trek, this does not compute! Henry will need to consider that very carefully in deciding whether to stay at Arsenal or to leave the club. Alou Diaby was brought to stiffen up the midfield, but, with the potential for injuries & suspensions, I think we need more than just one midfield hardman. That's why I think at least two other new midfield hardmen should be bought in the Summer. Whilst I have your attention, I must point out that while Chelsea have been doing well for the last season & this one too, they haven't exactly raised the bar in terms of playing highly attractive quality football, i.e. they haven't made the beautiful game even more beautiful. They have simply been more consistent than their nearerst rivals, who have generally suffered from self-inflicted errors, loss of form, unfortunate injuries & a lack of luck when it matters. So yes, Chelsea should be lauded for their consistency, & their efficient functionality, but if I was a child watching them play, it would hardly inspire me to run out of my home and start kicking a ball about in the streets!

I think everyone needs to calm down!! We have had an extremely unlucky season regards to injuries. I also agree that maybe one more addition to the squad is required preferably in midfield. I say sell Gilberto who has severely underperformed for the past two years, and bring in YaYa Toure and joaquin or Navas (great young talent from Sevilla). We have great potential in our squad, with the experience gained this season, i think you will see a better Arsenal next year.
